How to Use AI in a Website for Long-Term Growth: 14 Years of Lifelong Learning

Discovering how to use AI in a website effectively isn’t just about automating tasks—it is about supercharging your platform’s growth while maintaining complete human creative control. This website is a prime example of how that AI integration happens.

Using AI in a website requires patience, desire to learn, and resilience (AI-generated image of the author working in front of the computer).

Fourteen years ago today, on October 21, 2012, this platform was launched with a simple mission: to explore academic research and champion the pursuit of continuous learning and lifelong learning. What began as a tool to guide my own graduate students through their scholarly training has transformed.

The posts in this website cater both to continuous learning and lifelong learning; whether you are looking to master a new skill for your career or simply feed your curiosity, you will find something here to help you grow.

Today, this platform is my legacy to the world—a digital ecosystem designed to offer a global, open-access academic apprenticeship to anyone, anywhere, seeking to hone their skills in the rigorous craft of research. This includes successful adaptation to the modern realities of the field: from grounding investigations in foundational statistics to ethically harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence to accelerate global breakthroughs.

Thank you to our global community of educators, students, and thinkers for being an essential part of this long-term journey. The archive we have built together is a testament to what happens when we never stop asking questions.

While I have driven much of this work, this milestone is not mine alone. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all the incredible guest authors who have contributed posts over the years, sharing their deep academic and specialized expertise with our audience. The site would not be the rich hub it is today without your collaborative spirit.

But behind the clean lines of the website you see today lies a parallel journey of trial, error, and intense backstage labor. This platform is not just an archive of academic thought; it is the physical culmination of every technical, financial, and creative decision I have made over the last decade and a half.

The Technical Ordeal: Engineering for Speed

If you are a regular reader, you know how quickly these pages load. Achieving this level of performance was a massive mountain to climb.

In the pursuit of making this site accessible and blindingly fast for users worldwide, I moved away from basic hosting and invested in a dedicated Virtual Private Server (VPS) controlled via a Cloud Panel.

Figuring out how to navigate, secure, and run a VPS environment took a tremendous amount of time and effort. I learned to write configurations directly within the Cloud Panel interface to streamline our underlying codes. Beyond the visual interface, I had to drop into the command-line interface using SSH to manually tweak backend server blocks and system processes.

I learned how to configure a Redis Object Cache to speed up database queries, deploy a Varnish Cache proxy for instant page delivery, and write precise edge rules in Cloudflare to systematically block spam traffic.

Furthermore, I engineered custom rules within Cloudflare to dynamically bypass the cache for critical sections, ensuring my updates go live seamlessly alongside the routine flushing of modified content URLs.

I soon realized I had chosen one of the most challenging paths for managing a website. I assumed it was standard practice to run a VPS with cPanel, and I was constantly bombarded with technical jargon.

Fortunately, I had spent years using Linux and was already comfortable in the terminal.

This desire to enhance website performance brought with it migration-related issues that persist to this day. I still have to fix broken links here and there whenever I have the energy.

To find the bottlenecks, I turned myself into a continuous system auditor—constantly running the platform through performance checkers like PageSpeed Insights, GTmetrix, WebPageTest.org, and Pingdom to hunt down anything that added a single millisecond of delay.

I am obsessive-compulsive (I think) when it comes to performance, because I kept tweaking my website just to reach that coveted perfect score of 100 across all PageSpeed Insights parameters.

I actually achieved it once—but ended up with a completely blank website! The dreaded White Screen of Death.

It was funny yet enlightening; I had minified the code too aggressively and broken the site’s functionality.

Now, I aim for realistic, optimized speed while addressing the recent headache of perfecting Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), a critical component of user experience. By utilizing Gemini side-by-side with PageSpeed Insights diagnostic reports, I was able to successfully engineer the exact fixes needed to satisfy this metric.

I managed to reduce the website’s CLS score to zero by creating code snippets to preload and seamlessly swap typography. Solving this technical requirement with the aid of AI has been exhilarating.

I was also able to allocate explicit dimensions for my images to prevent rendering blocks that slow down website speed. I tried this a year ago without AI and was unsuccessful, ultimately abandoning the idea because I was overwhelmed by the technical jargon. But now, with the assistance of AI, I finally succeeded.

Experience and desire to learn paid off! AI is incredibly good at writing code; its sheer capability is mind-blowing.

The Breakthrough: How to Use AI in a Website Effectively

The turning point in managing this operational complexity was integrating Artificial Intelligence into my daily workflow.

If you want to know how to use AI in a website to scale operations without sacrificing quality, the secret lies in treating it as an expert assistant rather than an automated replacement.

As a lifelong learner, I used AI as an expert collaborator to learn how to properly configure server blocks, optimize databases, and set up advanced content delivery networks (CDN) to serve articles, images, and videos in the fastest way humanly possible.

Today, AI has become a cornerstone of my entire workflow. I utilize it across all aspects of this platform:

  • Website Maintenance: Writing server code, troubleshooting database glitches, and resolving performance errors.
  • Content Writing: Identifying long-tail keywords, brainstorming structures, polishing grammar, complying with Google’s E-E-A-T as consciously as possible, and refining snippet contents namely the title and meta-description.
  • Image Creation: Visualizing complex educational concepts into clean, compressed, fast-loading diagrams using Gimp, Inkscape and XMind. I adopted the webp format in my recent posts, and strived to have less than 100KB of image size. Creating images also require specific prompts to output the desired diagrams or infographics. It pays to imagine the output first before writing the prompts.
  • Video Production: Streamlining scripts and video workflows to create high-yield multimedia elements, I use OpenShot—an open-source video editing application—for my recent videos, while Speechelo helps improve AI speech by approximating natural human inflection, pronunciation, and expression.

Here’s a sample video of what I managed to create using Openshot while keeping safe at home during the Covid-19 pandemic.

AI has proven to be a powerful ally in diagnosing technical issues and addressing creative blocks. It has fundamentally streamlined my work, compressing weeks of technical trial-and-error into hours.

The Invaluable Role of Human Judgment

However, this journey has also taught me a critical lesson about the future of technology: AI is a powerful engine, but human judgment remains the driver.

While AI suggestions are transformative, they are not infallible. There are always technical glitches, hallucinations, or advice that doesn’t fit my specific site architecture.

Along the way, I learned to rely heavily on my own common sense—critically analyzing every line of code, design choice, or content structure AI proposed, and actively deciding when to follow it and when to reject it. I don’t blindly follow every recommendation.

My accumulated knowledge and experience have helped me make the hundreds, if not thousands, of critical choices required when confronted with complex website performance issues. If I don’t understand the recommendation, I defer action.

Sustaining the Mission: Support and Future Publications

Maintaining a fast, secure, and robust infrastructure under the hood requires real capital.

Currently, you will see strategically placed ads across the site, which directly support our ongoing server maintenance and security overhead. Beyond advertising, we have actively transitioned into academic publishing to help fuel this platform for years to come.

In our eStore, we offer specialized educational ebooks available in digital format only.

Furthermore, I have successfully published a print edition of Quantitative Data Analysis on Amazon.

The Ultimate Culmination

This 14th anniversary marks a beautiful milestone. The modern website you see today is the ultimate culmination of all my historical research, years of hard-earned technical resilience, and forward-thinking integration of artificial intelligence. It stands as a living proof of what lifelong learning looks like in the modern digital age.
